01

Understanding Basmati Rice

Basmati is an aromatic long-grain rice traditionally grown in the foothills of the Himalayas and the Indo-Gangetic plains. Its defining traits are long, slender grains, a distinctive aroma and significant elongation on cooking — grains grow mainly in length rather than width and remain separate.

India's Basmati exports are overseen by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), and exporters register their contracts with APEDA. Any claim about variety, origin or geographical indication status on a particular lot is only made where it can be documented.

02

Grain Length, Aroma and Cooking Characteristics

Buyers usually evaluate Basmati on:

  • average grain length before cooking, and how much the grain lengthens after cooking
  • aroma, which is partly influenced by variety, growing conditions and ageing
  • separateness — well-processed, aged Basmati cooks into fluffy, non-sticky grains
  • whiteness or colour, which depends on processing (raw, steam or sella)

Many buyers prefer aged Basmati because ageing tends to improve cooking quality. If ageing matters to you, agree how it will be evidenced.

03

Basmati Varieties and Specifications

Several Basmati varieties are traded commercially, and buyers often name the variety or type they want together with an average grain length. Availability of any specific variety depends on the crop year and miller stocks.

We do not offer a fixed list of varieties. Tell us what your market expects and we confirm what can be supplied, translating the variety name into measurable parameters in the quotation.

04

Raw and Other Processing Options

Basmati is commonly offered in these processing forms, subject to availability:

  • Raw (white) — milled and polished without parboiling; the most aromatic form, with a creamy-white colour.
  • Steam — lightly steamed before milling, giving firmer grains that hold up well in cooking.
  • Sella (parboiled) — fully parboiled; very firm and separate, with a cream colour. Golden sella has a deeper golden tone.

Each form suits different dishes and markets. Processing is fixed in the quotation.

05

Packaging and Private-Label Requirements

Basmati is packed in a wide range of formats, from bulk woven polypropylene bags to printed retail bags and jute or non-woven bags for premium packs. Private-label packing depends on the miller's capability, artwork approval, minimum print runs and destination labelling rules.

See packaging and private-label options and our guide to rice packaging.

06

Bulk Rice Procurement

For bulk Basmati enquiries we confirm variety, processing, grade, packing, quantity and shipment window with millers before preparing a quotation. Pesticide residue limits differ by market — the EU, for example, applies strict maximum residue levels — so testing requirements should be shared early.

India's rice export policy has changed several times in recent years, including duties or restrictions on certain non-Basmati categories. The policy in force at the time of contracting is checked as part of every quotation.

Buyer questions

Basmati Rice FAQs

What makes Basmati different from other long-grain rice?

Basmati combines long, slender grains with a distinctive aroma and strong elongation on cooking. Grains lengthen and stay separate, which is why it is preferred for biryani and pulao.

What is the difference between raw, steam and sella Basmati?

Raw Basmati is milled without parboiling and is the most aromatic. Steam Basmati is lightly steamed before milling for firmer grains. Sella is fully parboiled, giving very firm, separate grains with a cream or golden colour.

Which Basmati varieties can I enquire about?

You can name the variety or type your market expects. Availability depends on the crop year and miller stocks, so we confirm it for each enquiry.

Why do buyers ask for aged Basmati?

Ageing generally improves cooking quality — grains cook more separately and elongate better. If you require aged rice, agree how ageing will be evidenced.

How is grain length specified?

Usually as the average length of whole uncooked grains in millimetres, sometimes with a cooked-length requirement. The measurement method is agreed in the specification.

Can Basmati be packed under my brand?

Private-label packing can be discussed, subject to the miller's capability, artwork approval, minimum print runs and destination labelling rules.

Is pesticide residue testing available?

Testing by an accredited third-party laboratory can be arranged where agreed. Results are documented before shipment; we do not guarantee results in advance.
